You Should Be Sleeping Like a Blog
This made us titter at Furniture Style Online the other day. Earlier we mentioned the forthcoming National Bed Month and we gave you our top ten tips for a better night’s sleep. Well the aforementioned month of the bed is upon us and we can’t believe what the organisers, The Sleep Council, are recommending. They want us to get shorter beds. Seriously.
This was the headline we read in one of the trade magazines: ‘Sleep Council calls for shorter bed replacement cycle’. Why do they want us to get shorter beds? Unless you happen to be Goldilocks or one of the Three Bears, or related to them, we’d have thought that you would choose your bed on width, rather than length.
Sorry, we’ve just realised we misinterpreted that headline. They want the replacement cycle* to be shorter. We get it now. They claim to have proven that beds need replacing every seven years – and not the ten years or more, as commonly quoted by manufacturers. The Sleep Council, which is the promotion body funded by the National Beds Federation, says that some research has been conducted on its behalf by the Furniture Industry Research Association (surely, like quangos, these bodies could be amalgamated to save the industry some money? The National Furniture Industry Council for Research into Beds and Better Sleeping Federation? Or NFICRBBSF for short?) Anyway, this research reveals that mattresses do show signs of perishing or losing their capability to provide adequate support, after just a few years of use.
A separate consumer survey though, has revealed a disparity between the public’s perception of their bed and how it may be affecting the quality of their sleep. Nine out of ten punters quizzed said that they were either happy or very happy with the quality of their bed, yet four-fifths also said they tended to wake up tired, or regularly woke up during the night.
So while we try to take this subject a little more seriously, we’d better direct you to the Sleep Council website for some help and tips – leaflets, relax and exercise videos, helpful links, and the My Bed Profile, a short questionnaire that will help you to identify the characteristics of any new mattress and bed you should be looking for, based on your individual needs. And they also publish a Bed MOT guide, with ten top reasons for the need for a new bed:
1. Is it seven or eight years old or more?
2. Did you have your best night’s sleep recently with another one?
3. Are you waking up more frequently unrefreshed and aching?
4. Do you disturb your partner or are you disturbed by them when changing sleep positions?
5. Does it look used or worn?
6. Does it feel lumpy?
7. Does it make suspicious noises in the night?
8. Is it sagging. Do you both roll towards the middle of the bed?
9. Are the base, legs or castors lumpy, worn or wobbly?
10. Would it be embarrassing if neighbours saw it without its covers?
Well we’ve tried, honest, but we’re still finding it very difficult to take this topic seriously. Just read through those questions again and imagine they’re suggesting an MOT on your partner rather than your bed: Does it feel lumpy… Does it look used or worn… Is it sagging… Does it make suspicious noises in the night… Are the legs lumpy, worn or wobbly… Did you have your best night’s sleep recently with another one?
So let’s finish simply by saying that we stock lots of beds.

Kim and I went to various stores to check out toddler beds. We wanted to get the best prices on them, so we could save money. Both of our children were in need of a toddler bed, since they have now reached the stage in life where they can sleep in beds now. Our children are the same age (the are only a month apart from one another.), and they are growing up very nicely. It seemed like that were just little tiny babies yesterday.
First, Kim and I went to Toys R Us. We looked around for a bit but could not find any toddler beds that could fit into our desired budget. The prices there did seem a bit high for our taste. Then, we went to Wal-Mart. Soon after we were there, the both of us found beds that we knew our children would like, and they were well within our budget. We were so happy to find that!
