A Dozen Key Points on How to Enrich Your Cat’s Indoor Environment

July 29th, 2011

How can you ensure that your cat lives a happy, enriched indoor life? By implementing the following steps! Physical health is not the only important aspect of taking good care of your cat; mental well-being is just as essential to providing your cat with a long, rich, fulfilling life. Indoor cats do not have the same opportunities as outdoor cats do to express their natural instinctive behaviors and experience the same sensory stimuli: hunting, lying hidden underneath the boughs of a tree, listening to the sounds of nature, scratching tree trunks, perching atop branches, marking and defending territory, mating, and so forth.

The main goal of environmental enrichment is to provide indoor cats with surrogate activities and situations that serve as enjoyable outlets for their natural behaviors. As cat owners we derive endless pleasure from the relationships we enjoy with out felines. In return it is our duty to ensure that our kitties also benefit from their domestic lifestyles, not just vice versa. And not just in regard to physical well-being (of which there are many benefits for cats). Despite the fact that their worlds are limited to single households, there are still a plethora of ways with which indoor cats may be kept active, engaged, and mentally stimulated.

Rotate Toys

Rotate the toys that are available to your cat every week, keeping most of them in an inaccessible cupboard.

Cats become quickly bored with toys once they are no longer novel, so by rotating toys so that they only see each individual toy once every four to five weeks, the toys become like new again and again!

Catnip Toys

Many cats love indulging in catnip toys. Many catnip toys lose their ‘nip after a period of time, so the best ones are refillable catnip toys. You can also ‘marinate’ regular cat toys in jars or containers of catnip and then give them to your cat for his or her enjoyment! It is also possible to grow your own catnip plants, and it is not difficult to do. You simply harvest some of the catnip periodically, dry it out, crumble it, place it into a container, and stuff it into refillable catnip toys.

Grooming

Spend five to ten minutes gently grooming your cat every day. Cats often mutually groom one another, and it is an important bonding behavior.

Start by gently brushing under your cat’s chin, then its cheeks, and then move to the rest of the body. This will be a relaxing experience for both you and your cat, and will also help decrease the amount of hair that will be shed around the home.

Place self groomers around the most feline frequented corners of your home – cats love these, and will rub up against them more times over the course of a day than you can count!

Training Your Cat

Cats can easily learn a variety of tricks such as ’sit,’ ’shake paw,’ ‘come’ and many others, and it provides them with excellent mental stimulation to learn these tricks.

Your cat will also benefit from the added social interaction time with you, along with the positive rewards and attention lavished on them for properly responding to commands.

Use only positive reinforcement to teach your cat the desired behaviors, never ever punish your cat with physical or verbal negative interactions.

Cat Trees

Have cat trees available in more than one room of your house. Cats enjoy having perches of varying height. Felines are naturally a semi-arboreal species, so providing ‘cat trees’ is truly providing them with what they would naturally enjoy doing outdoors. Cats revel in being able to sit and observe situations, and feel that they are at a safe height. Having multiple cat trees with high perches is particularly important in a multiple cat household – cats will get along much better with one another when they have the readily available option to withdraw from the company of their fellow housemates

Window Seats

Similar to how it is important to provide cats with observational perches within the home to observe household happenings, it is just as important to ensure that your cat is able to enjoy the outdoors from a safe place; in other words, cats should have easily accessible window ledges from which they can observe the outdoors on a daily basis.

If window ledges are too narrow for your cat to be able to comfortably sit on them, you can strategically place furniture (such as shelving) around your home so that they have a seat available to them.

You can also purchase cat window seats that you can easily install yourself – they are inexpensive and very effective!

Open your windows to provide your cat with fresh air and unimpeded sounds from the outdoors – just be certain that your window screens are secure and strong before doing so!

Even if you are not planning to enjoy downtime in a particular room, remember to raise the window shades anyhow, so that your kitty can enjoy the view.

Outdoor Enclosures & Walking Your Cat

Consider providing safe ways for your cat to enjoy the outdoors. There are many websites that allow you to build safe, esthetically pleasing outdoor cat enclosures, that work for both houses and apartments – the following links are just a few of many such sites:

Harness and leash walking allows provides fresh air and exercise for the both of you

This is one of my personal favorites; it never fails to generate funny looks from people, and it never ceases to make me smile when my Freddy asks me for walks at the doorway ro when he comes running excitedly at the sound of his harness jingling!

Cats actually do quite well with leash walking when a body harness is used, rather than a collar and leash, particularly if harness and leash training is started in kittenhood

You can also purchase pet strollers that have a fine mesh and allow cats to be walked by you while enjoying the scenery and feeling safely enclosed in their stroller.

Playmates for Your Cat

Although it is easiest to ensure that cats will get along well together when they are raised together from an early age, it is still possible to introduce adult cats to one another, or to introduce a kitten to an adult cat.

Unfortunately, even when kittens are raised together, there is never any guarantee that they will sustain a good relationship throughout their lives – cat relationships are quite volatile and are subject to change from seemingly small events and influences.

That said, many cats do get along quite well together, and there are lots of ways you can help ensure a healthy relationship between housemates. Having a playmate helps provide social interaction and affection for your cats when you are at work or out of the home, is a constant play resource, and cats in multiple cat households often get more exercise as well.

Puzzle Feeders (facilitating food foraging and predatory behaviors)

Do NOT free feed your cat (have food constantly available in a bowl), because this makes food boring and facilitates obesity. Obesity will greatly decrease your cat’s quality of life.

Leaving a small quantity of healthy treats (e.g. freeze-dried chicken) available in puzzle feeders while away from home during the day, and when in bed overnight – this allows for small feedings at your cat’s leisure and will encourage natural foraging/hunting behaviors and exercise. Puzzle feeders are also mentally stimulating.

Another method of having your cat work for their food and which will simulate foraging, is to hide treats around the home that they can spend time searching out through the day.

Also, toss treats across a room or down a hallway so that it becomes a game and your cat can chase and pounce on them is another great way to simulate hunting behavior inside your home.

Scratching Posts

Have scratching posts available in the rooms most frequented by your cat.

Scratching is a normal cat behavior, and having scratching posts that your cat thoroughly enjoys greatly enhances the pleasure derived from his or her daily routine.

Incline: Some cats prefer a vertical scratching surface, others prefer horizontal, and yet others are partial to a gentle incline.

Substrate: Some cats prefer rope, others carpeting, and some prefer simple $10 cardboard cat scratchers (which, incidentally, are available as flat, horizontal surfaces, and also as ramps of varying inclines)!

Also, remember that not all carpets are made equal… soft, low quality carpet does not provide good durability, and most cats prefer tougher, higher quality carpeting that they can really dig their claws into.

Stability: A solid, wide base is paramount to having a sturdy cat scratching post.

Daily Routines and Predictability

Cats are very much creatures of habit, and having certain key routines in their lives helps to provide them with a sense of security.

Events that should have predictability to them include key feeding times, cleaning the litter box(es), grooming your cat, and playing time.

On the flip side of that, it is also important to provide small novelties in their routine as well, to prevent life from becoming boring – these can include a new type of treat, a new cardboard box in the living room to play with, a brand-new toy, or some unexpected cuddle time.

Avoid Disruptive Events (and sudden changes in your cat’s environment)

Routinely creating small changes to their environment allows your cat to develop coping mechanisms to deal with change, so that when real change arrives they are not entirely without the skills to deal with it.

Make significant changes incrementally to avoid high levels of stress

For example, if you are moving to a new home, maintain all of your cat’s routines as strictly as possible with regards to feeding times, grooming time, etc., and introduce your cat to its new environment slowly.

Start by allowing your cat to live in one room of the home, and provide lots of familiar items to help your cat acclimatize to this new territory. Next, expose your cat to an entire floor of the new home, and then eventually allow your cat to explore the entire house.

Summary

If you implement these methods of environmental enrichment for your cat, you should have a content, sociable feline that relishes every minute of every day (of which he or she is awake!).

Diesel Engine Repair Technicians – A Rare Breed

July 29th, 2011

The economy is on the rise, and America is once again feeling confident in our nation. With the renewed confidence, spending is also on the rise. Supplies of all kinds of goods are dwindling down, and suppliers are restocking them. How does goods of all types get to the suppliers? You guessed it, the over the road truck and driver. One indication of a strong economy is how many tractor – trailers are moving freight up and down the roads. As of lately, that number is sharply on the rise. The tractor that pulls that load has to be in top operating condition at all times. Enter the diesel technician.

Diesel engine repair is more than a person and a tool box. These techs. are highly trained, and extremely knowledgeable in all the different systems found on a class 8 semi truck. Long gone are the days of a mechanic walking out to a truck with a hand tray of tools. Modern diesel engine repair technicians most often start a proper diagnosis with a lap top computer. Like a skilled surgeon in their field, the problem is quickly identified, and a repair is made correctly the first time. Experience plays a major role in this repair process, and a technician with years of experience is a good person to be friends with. This type of experience is highly sought after in the world of truck repair. Competition between businesses that employ these people is, not surprisingly, quite fierce. Because of the knowledge base a diesel engine repair technician is equipped with, they can usually write their own ticket as where in the country they wish to work.

Along with the knowledge a diesel technician has, their home away from home is the tool box they own. Not your standard tool box found in most home garages, this type of tool box is usually three to four times larger. With all the specialty tools required to diagnose problems, storage for these expensive items is very important. While the wage that a diesel engine repair technician receives is well above the minimum wage requirements, keep in mind that the tools used are also purchased by the technician. The investment made by a highly trained diesel engine repair technician will easily run into six figures. A good rule of thumb at a repair facility is that if one has to borrow a tool from someone else more than twice, it should be bought and put into personal inventory.

The down side to being a diesel engine repair technician is that it is hard on a body. Everything on a class 8 truck is big and heavy. Brake drums alone weigh in at close to one hundred pounds. Ask a gear man the weight of a 15.5 inch clutch. Then ask them where it goes. Lifting one of these monsters in a confined space certainly builds character, to say the least. Cylinder heads, pistons, crankshafts, intake and exhaust manifolds. All are on the larger scale and need to be wrestled around on a daily basis by the diesel engine repair technician. These people have brawn to go along with their brains.

Next time you see a tractor – trailer moving needed freight down the road for our nation, think of all the diesel engine repair technicians that keep them rolling. Everyone of these people in the trucking industry are viable partners, and we need all of them.

Getting Your Childcare License Increases Your Cash Flow

July 28th, 2011

Many people feel that getting a daycare or childcare license is not necessary for childcare providers. Legally you only need a license if you are going to care for children from more than one family. It’s true that going through the process of obtaining your daycare license can be time consuming and sometimes stressful. However, the truth is that obtaining your childcare license can actually help you make more money! There are three ways that a daycare license increases your cash flow. They are: 1. Charging higher rates and bringing in new clients; 2. Income from food programs; and 3. Grant money.

Let’s take a closer look at item #1. Charging higher rates and bringing in new clients. Parents searching for childcare look at both quality of care and cost of care when making a decision. Believe it or not, childcare rates can vary greatly even in the same geographical location. So it pays for parents to shop around. However, most parents are willing to pay a little more for childcare if they know the quality of care will be outstanding. Obtaining your childcare license shows your dedication to top quality care. Also, many parents aren’t willing to place their child in an unlicensed childcare because there are no inspections done and no one is monitoring the childcare provider. So having your license can actually help your bring in more business!

The second way a daycare license helps increase cash flow is from income through the food programs. Food programs are systems set up to help educate childcare providers on serving healthy snacks and lunches to the children they care for. As a provider you must submit a monthly menu of what you serve for monitoring. It takes a little more work, but you are actually reimbursed a portion of the cost for each meal and snack you serve! These reimbursements aren’t huge but they certainly help defray the cost of feeding multiple children several times a day. These food programs are only available to licensed providers and they can certainly increase your cash flow!

Finally, getting your daycare license allows you to apply for the many grants that are available for home daycare providers. There are a lot of grants out there from local, state and federal government as well as from private sources. Some grants stipulate how the money is to be used; for example for play equipment, books, or facility improvements. Other grants are more open-ended and allow you to use the funds however they are needed for your childcare business. These grant monies are like pennies from Heaven and can really help financially! But these grants are only available to licensed childcare providers!

As you can see, getting your childcare license can really help boost your business financially. Even though the licensing process may be cumbersome, it can really “pay off” in the end!

Finding an Auto Repair Shop For Engine Repair

July 26th, 2011

You may have a reputable automotive shop that you regularly use for your vehicle maintenance such as tire replacement, oil changes and other routine issues. If you don’t have a regular shop, you can ask your family, friends and coworkers whom they trust. Recommendations from these people should be held in high esteem, because a local auto shop that has earned the trust of your family and friends will work hard to make you a customer for life.

If you have significant engine problems with your car, you’ll first want to check your warranty and see if the manufacturer covers the issue. When you bring your car to the shop, you’ll need to ask if the automotive shop guarantees their work in case the issue is not fixed properly or if it comes back without warning. The automotive shop manager will be able to discuss the policies of the shop and offer you a guarantee on the work to be performed on your vehicle.

Be sure to inquire about the type of parts the automotive shop will use on your car. Are they brand name, quality products or cheap, generic products? Make sure they are using only high quality parts. Either way, you will be charged labor fees, so be certain the parts they replace on your vehicle are brand name, quality products.

Depending on your specific engine problem, you may need to leave your vehicle at the auto shop for an extended period of time. Make sure you arrange for transportation. Your favorite auto repair shop may be located near a bus line or taxi stand. Also, your insurance company may offer a rental car. Some repair shops will offer a courtesy vehicle or provide a drop off/pick up service so you can work during the day and get your vehicle back in the evening.

Before any work is performed on your vehicle, be sure to ask for an estimate. Agree on a price and ask your mechanic to specifically outline what work is to be done. A good auto shop will alert you of any additional issues that come up during the repair that was not initially noticed. Therefore, you won’t be surprised when you see charges for parts and labor on work that you never authorized.

It is important that you trust your automotive technicians. You are leaving your car in their hands and are counting on the fact that they are experienced, trained and can properly fix the issue at hand. If you do not already have a good relationship with a local automotive shop, ask your friends and neighbors who they trust. Begin using a popular auto shop for your routine maintenance issues, and you’ll begin to develop a trusting relationship with them and get to know the mechanics on a more personal level. Then you can feel good about leaving your car in their hands when larger engine issues arise.

Mr. Oliver is a marketing agent of Dyke Tire and Battery. The auto mechanic repair shop stocks tires for virtually every vehicle on the road and also offers local Richmond-ers a great place to take their vehicles in for repair. Whether you need a simple oil change, new tires or a rotation, or engine repair, Dyke Tire and Battery can help get you back on the road again. The 10-Step Resume Critique

July 25th, 2011

Your resume will generally receive a 15- to 30-second scan upon first review by an employer. With that in mind, it is critical that your resume — your “paper handshake” — makes a positive first impression and compels the reader to put your resume in the “yes” pile and possibly call you in for an interview.

Before you circulate your resume, you will want to ensure it incorporates the basic characteristics of a powerful, interview-generating resume. When evaluating your resume you can follow the same basic steps as professional resume writers. This will increase the chances not only of having it placed into that “yes” pile, but also of helping it rise to the top of the stack.

STEP 1: Ask yourself, “Is my resume in the correct format to best showcase my career history?”

Is your resume the appropriate length, format, and formality for the position you are targeting?

Length: For someone with five or more years of experience, a resume will typically be one to two pages. It isn’t at all uncommon for executive-level resumes to be as long as three or four pages. If you are a recent college graduate one page may suffice, but don’t be afraid to go two pages, particularly if you have some work, internship, or volunteer experience under your belt.

Format: There are three common types of resumes: chronological, functional, and combination. A chronological resume calls attention to your employment history in reverse chronological order. It is most effective when your job listings are notable (position titles and/or company names) and are directly relevant to the job target.

A functional resume de-emphasizes positions, job descriptions, and employment dates. It organizes qualifications by related skills or experience. Job seekers who have gaps in employment or who are making a career change commonly use functional resumes. Think carefully before using this format as feedback from hiring authorities suggests that they don’t like them — they know that functional resumes can be used to minimize, or even hide, periods of unemployment and other flaws in your history.

A typical combination resume is just that — a blend of the other two formats. It begins with a powerful Qualifications Summary or Professional Profile that clearly communicates your functional skills. This allows your resume to be focused toward particular positions and/or industries, and provides a platform to communicate the your best qualifications. A reverse-chronological listing of employment experience (including responsibilities and, more importantly, relevant accomplishments) follows. The combination format is a popular choice among professional resume writers as it is particularly effective in selling their clients to employers.

A fourth type of resume, which won’t be discussed at length here, is the Curriculum Vita. A “CV” is a conservatively written and designed document that emphasizes educational credentials, academic research and projects, publications, presentations, awards, and honors. This format is typically used in scholastic, medical, and scientific fields.

Formality: A good rule of thumb is to write using the same level of language that you would be expected to use in the job you are targeting. An entry-level resume can include brief sentences. If you are a manager or executive your resume will be more narrative — to draw a complete picture of your career successes and contributions — and include vernacular expected at your level of accountability.

STEP 2: Ask yourself, “Is my resume visually appealing and easy to read?”

Have you incorporated appropriate font type and size selections throughout your resume? Depending on the font choice, the size should fall somewhere between 9 and 11 point, 12 point at most. Section headings can be larger, of course. As for font type, the higher your level of responsibility, the more likely it is that you will use a serif font (such as Times New Roman, Garamond, or Palatino). It is acceptable to combine fonts, but never more than two (for example, Times for the section titles and Arial for the content).

Does your resume contain sufficient white space? Your challenge is to draw the reader’s attention to essential information. Using white space effectively can help you do just that. You’ll need to become familiar with some features of your word processing software that you might not normally access (such as the paragraph, line-spacing, and tab settings).

Does your resume implement appropriate design elements? Conservative use of lines, bolding, italics, and bullets can be very effective. When used consistently, they will help the reader along in your thought process and crystallize the organization of your resume.

For great ideas on contemporary formats, check out one or more of the recently released resume resource books at your local bookstore. One of the best out there is Resume Magic–Trade Secrets of a Professional Resume Writer by Susan Britton Whitcomb (JIST Works). For executive-level ideas, Wendy Enelow’s Best Resumes for $100,000+ Jobs (Impact Publications) or Donald Asher’s Bible of Executive Resumes (Ten Speed Press) are both outstanding.

STEP 3: Ask yourself, “Does my resume contain a powerful opening section that draws the reader in?”

Is the most relevant information you want to communicate showcased in a powerful Qualifications Summary or Professional Profile in the top 1/3 of your resume? At a minimum, you’ll want to include your total years of experience and encapsulate your core competencies and related hard and soft skills. Keep in mind that the remainder of your resume must substantiate what you include in this section.

Does your resume make clear what position, industry, or career you are targeting? Employers don’t have time to guess what you want to be when you grow up.

Step 4: Ask yourself, “Does my resume effectively communicate my value to the prospective employer in one or more of the following ways?”

Does your resume demonstrate how you can help an employer make money? Save money or time? Solve a specific problem? Make work easier? Build relationships? Be more competitive? Attract new customers? Retain existing customers?

Regardless of your level of accountability or industry these are things that all organizations want their employees to help them accomplish. Communicate your abilities to contribute in one or more of the areas mentioned and employers will want to talk with you.

Step 5: Ask yourself, “Does my resume contain powerful, concise, accomplishment-oriented writing designed to increase the reader’s interest and stimulate a request for a job interview?”

Is your entire resume targeted? Does it support your job or career goal? Does it speak the reader’s language with relevant industry-specific keywords? Did you use persuasive, high-impact statements that sell your qualifications as a superior candidate? Does your resume include specific accomplishments that highlight challenges, action taken, and results (quantifiable, if possible)?

Most importantly, do the accomplishments support your target? In other words, do they represent observable behaviors that are associated with the best in your field?

Step 6: Ask yourself, “Is irrelevant information excluded?”

There is no need to include any of the following: personal information (e.g. marital status and age), full address of employers (city and state is sufficient), personal pronouns (“I”, “He” or “She”), reasons for leaving jobs, reference information, and unrelated hobbies or interests.

Step 7: Ask yourself, “Does my resume present relevant content in an organized fashion?”

As a general rule, you’ll only need to cover the last 10 years of employment in detail, 15 years at the most. Anything prior can be summarized, but do attempt to keep the information relevant and accomplishment oriented.

Are your employment dates presented appropriately? There is no need to get specific — months and years are sufficient in most cases.

Did you include more than one source of contact information? At a minimum, list your home phone number and e-mail address. By the way, if you don’t have an e-mail address, get one…now! Listing it on your resume tells employers that you are technologically savvy.

Is your experience arranged in reverse chronological order? Are all other sections of your resume applicable to the types of positions you are pursuing?

STEP 8: Ask yourself, “Is my resume free of spelling, punctuation, capitalization, grammatical, and syntax errors?”

Feedback from hiring authorities is unanimous — a resume with errors is likely to be immediately discounted. They assume that your performance on the job will be sloppy and that you don’t pay attention to details. Proofread your resume. Ask a friend or colleague to proofread your resume. Ask your mother to proofread your resume.

Step 9: Repeat step 8.

Step 10: Repeat step 8 again!

Your resume is a material representation of you. It is a marketing document — not a simple work history — that tells organizations how you can contribute to their success. Ask yourself the questions above as you review your self-written resume. If you’ve covered everything, you are well on your way to getting companies interested in you.

Is a Blog Right For Your Business?

July 25th, 2011

Lemmings are cute, but dumb. If you tell them to jump off a cliff, they will. Just like the people who start blogs because everyone is doing it. Guess what happens after a little while? The blogs die.

In managing a list of many Web sites, most of which are blogs, I deleted countless sites from the list because the sites and blogs no longer existed. The people ran out of steam or had no reason to start them in the first place.

How do you know when a blog is right for your business? Learn why people start blogs, how they find their niche and how blogging tools can be used for more than blogs.

Some people like to read blogs, others like to read newsletters, still others like to rely on feeds and some read a few or all of them. No matter the method the information is distributed, each medium has one thing in common: content. Having a blog connects your newsletter and your business with all of these readers and delivers important content in a particular style.

I’ve been blogging since June 2000. If you review my early blog entries in meryl’s notes, you’ll notice they’re more personal. When blogs first hit the scene in the late ’90s, they were personal diaries and journals. Like the blog business, my blog has transformed from personal to business speak, although I still add personal notes here and there.

A few bloggers tend to talk about their work, their products and their little world. That might work for celebrities where fans want to know everything about them, but it doesn’t work for the average business person. Other business people want information on how to succeed and when a blog spends time hawking products offering information of no value, few people will return. The people whose products sell well are the ones who provide valuable information. Readers already know what kind of information they’re getting, so they trust that when they buy something, it will be of the same or better quality. This value must be reflected in their blog. It’s much like people who only sign up for a newsletter after first seeing an example.

No one wants to be a lemming (I would hope). How do you decide whether or not to set up a blog? The answer isn’t black or white (what did you expect?). Ask these questions:

  • Can you regularly update it — at least five times a week?
  • Do you have something to say other than just linking to others?
  • Do you read other blogs or feeds?
  • Can you provide information of value to others not just to yourself?
  • How large is your newsletter subscriber list?
  • How many unique visitors do you get on an average day, week or month?

The big decider is whether or not you can write in the blog almost daily. The people behind the high traffic blogs post multiple times a day. Though resourceful, merely linking to other sites doesn’t give visitors much reason to make the effort to come to yours. Reading other blogs or feeds is a great way to learn how to carry a discussion. Find other blogs covering topics similar to yours and check them out. Disagree with their opinions? Write about it and explain your reasons. Cross-blog discussions are common, and that’s where trackback comes in handy.

Trackback is a blog feature. If you decide to comment on another blog posting in your blog instead of in that blog’s comments page, then you link to the conversation through the trackback link. Trackback is similar to the permalink, the permanent URL for the blog entry, but it has a different URL for copying and pasting in your blog’s trackback box.

Aside from the technical aspects of operating a blog on a daily basis, subscriber list size and Web site traffic are good indicators of what kind of reaction you’ll get when opening a blog. Starting from scratch with little traffic means you have a long road ahead and lots of work to do. There is no magic formula anyone can sell you for $97 to make your blog an overnight success. But with some perseverance and ingenuity, your blog can engage many prospects and clients.

Considering there are numerous blogs out there, pick a niche topic when starting a blog for a better shot at attracting and keeping an audience. meryl’s notes focuses on three areas: webby, geeky and wordy. In reality, this is too much. What I need to do for my readers is create three separate blog entry points, so those interested in writing, newsletters and Internet marketing get nothing but the wordy entries. Those interested in Web design get the webby stuff and the technophiles receive the geeky content.

I also manage a personal blog separate from meryl’s notes. It’s about cochlear implants and deafness. This could fall under the geeky category, but it’s a personal blog and doesn’t belong in meryl’s notes. This blog is written for a different audience.

The blogging tools for both of my blogs come with syndication capabilities so those using feed readers or aggregators can read the content through the software. When sending a new issue of a newsletter, comment on it or link to it in the blog, that way the blog and feed readers will get the goods, so all three bases are covered.

Blogging tools aren’t just for, well, blogging. Such tools are an excellent way to help you update your Web site more often than you otherwise would. I use it to manage the list of tableless Web sites. Using blogging tools is much easier than the way I managed it before, updating the HTML files by hand. Though using a blog tool, it isn’t a blog. In this case, the blog tool has become a content management system (CMS).

Small business owners don’t have a need for the fancy and pricey CMSes out there. They find it easier to use blogging software to manage their sites or hire someone to adapt the tool for their site.

Blogs have found a place in businesses and people are finding creative ways to use them. Some companies have a blog on the intranet for communicating project status, jeopardies and metrics. They’re used for knowledge management. With information pouring in, blog tools provide a way to share, organize and process the information.

Being a follower can be good or bad. No one wants to walk off a cliff with the lemmings, but everyone wants to succeed. Best practices won’t help, since the decision to blog is based on the organization’s mission, needs and goals along with its target market’s desires and needs. A blog about lemmings? There is one, sort of. Or maybe you’d like to start your own and talk about dumb business moves.

The Art & Spirit of the Exotic Sports Car

July 24th, 2011

Anyone who has seen the Lamborghini Reventón or the Aston Martin DBS knows that unmistakable feeling. It’s the thrill & the allure of the exotic sports car, overhauled & updated for the 21st century. Since their inception, sports cars have continually pushed the boundaries of both engineering & art. These are the cars that exemplify speed, power and beauty.

Alfa Romeo: The Grandfather of Exotic Sports Cars

Alfa Romeo first began producing racecars in Milan, Italy in 1910. Their first endeavor, the HP 24, turned some heads with its superior speed and handling. Chief Designer Giuseppe Merosi worked on all Alfa Romeo models from 1910 to 1923. When Merosi retired, racecar driver Enzo Ferrari persuaded Vittorio Jano to leave Fiat and take over Merosi’s work.

In 1925, Alfa Romeo unveiled the P2 Grand Prix Car, Jano’s first car with Romeo and widely considered the first “supercar.” The P2 was powered by a straight-8 cylinder supercharged engine, and placed first in 14 Grand Pix races between 1924 and 1930. Today, the P2 Grand Prix is considered one of the most rarified of the collectible antique cars, with less than a dozen still intact.

This year marks the return of Alfa Romeo to the United States. Their current sports car, the 8C Competizione, is stunning with its sleek lines, 4.7L 6-cylinder engine & a top speed of 181 mph. This car is destined to send ripples throughout the US market.

Ferrari: High Performance, Luxury Cars

After racing Alfa Romeos in the 1920’s & 30’s, Enzo Ferrari decided that he wanted to build his own racecars. He prototyped a few models in the 1940’s, but it wasn’t until after World War II that he found success. Notably, Ferrari’s exotic sports cars took first place in the Formula 1 World Championships, 24 Hours of Le Mans and the World Sportscar Championships throughout the 1950’s.

Ferrari’s Gran Turismo series remains its most successful lines, with the 2007 599 GTB Fiorano bringing even more luxury and innovation to the table. Patrons of the Ferrari Club of America cite performance as the primary reason for purchasing a Ferrari over other collectible cars.

Lamborghini : Exotic Sports Cars for a New Generation

Ferruccio Lamborghini had a successful business building tractors in Italy before his eyes turned to the exotic sports car. And it wasn’t a love for performance that stirred his fire, but a disdain for Enzo Ferrari.

According to Lamborghini’s family, Ferruccio purchased a Ferrari 250 GT in the early 1960’s and was unhappy with the handling & response of the clutch. He brought it into Ferrari’s factory and met with Enzo Ferrari to voice his concerns. Ferrari was immediately upset with Lamborghini’s complaints so he mocked Lamborghini and sent him away. Lamborghini went home, dismantled the car and discovered that the clutches installed in Ferraris were from the same manufacturers he used for his tractors. He installed a new clutch and vowed to create a higher-quality, luxury sports car than Ferrari.

While Lamborghini has countless models that produce awe and wonder in car enthusiasts, it’s the 1974 Countach that remains their most iconic. Designer Marcello Gandini, then just beginning his career, placed his focus on style over aerodynamics. With its scissor doors, sharp lines and low, wide frame, the Countach raised the bar for Lamborghini. The Diablo, the Murciélago, and even the 2008 Reventón follow in its wake.

Aston Martin: Unforgettable Collectible Cars

Britain’s Aston Martin was founded by Lionel Martin & Robert Bamford in 1914. They designed exotic sports cars and drove in competitions, but it wasn’t until David Brown became managing director of the company in 1947 that they were able to establish themselves as a maker of high-quality, high-performance sports cars. They introduced the DB line (DB standing for David Brown) in 1950, and many of their models have become synonymous with antique and collectible cars.

Newer DB models include the luxurious DB-7, which was designed by Ian Callum and produced from 1994 to 2001. This model won the Jim Clark Award in 1995, and remains Aston Martin’s most successful car to-date.

Where to Find Collectible Cars for Sale

Buying and selling exotic sports cars is a specialized process that requires a credible and secure collector car trader. Some of the best experts are other exotic sports car owners. To find out more about buying and selling antique cars or classic collectible cars the first place to look are exotic sports car clubs such as http://www.lamborghiniclub.com or [http://www.exoticcarrental.com/FerrariClubs.com]

Health Insurance – Tips to Help You Choose the Right Policy

July 24th, 2011

Choosing the best health insurance plan involves the following:

  1. Finding the health insurance plan with the lowest cost (but only with respect to the other two criteria)
  2. Finding the health insurance plan with a network that meets your needs
  3. Finding the health insurance plan with coverage that meets your needs

Choosing the right health insurance policy involves finding the lowest price amongst the policies that meet your needs as to network and coverage. Choosing the lowest price is of course very easy. Determining whether the health insurance plan’s network of doctors meets your needs is only a little more difficult. Choosing a health insurance policy that covers you well can be complex. Most of this article focuses on this area. I’ve been a health insurance agent since 1985 and have helped many families find affordable health insurance. You can find out more about me by visiting 1800insuranceCT.com. These are the strategies that I use when helping a family find good medical coverage in my home state of Connecticut. To help find out what health insurance plans are available and approved in your area, I’ve put together a list of Insurance Departments for each state.

Choosing the Health Insurance Plan with the Right Network

Most companies have websites that will list the doctors and hospitals that participate in their plan. All that I’m aware of will have a printed list that they can mail to you. The right plan will have your doctor on their list or at least doctors who serve your home area. If you travel it is important to find a plan that covers you well in other geographic areas as well.

Choosing the Health Insurance Plan with the best coverage

Health insurance contracts may be the most complex of the insurance policies purchased by the average family. Understanding how your health insurance policy will pay for your medical bills can be difficult. Fortunately most of the brochures and outlines of coverage that you may receive from a health insurance provider will have a similar structure.

They will have sections similar to the following: What is Covered? Health Plan Exclusions and Limitations What is Covered?

This section will detail what medical procedures your health insurance policy will cover. The policy should have a phrase like “reasonable and customary” or “usual, reasonable and customary” or something similar when describing how much they will cover.

Watch out for health insurance policies with:

Dollar amount limits for each procedure

A long list of procedures that the health insurance policy will cover Better health insurance policies will not list dollar amounts for each procedure. They will pay using a formula that is based on what other doctors or medical providers will charge you in the same geographic area. A phrase like “usual and customary” indicates that they use such a formula. The cost of medical care rises so quickly that a dollar amount that seems impressive today may not fully reimburse you even a year from now.

Solid health Insurance policies will not have a long list of procedures that they will cover listed on the policy. The long list seems impressive because the list takes up a lot of space. Look at the statements below. It should be easy to choose between one and two.

  1. “Our health insurance policy will cover you for everything except for expenses caused by self-inflicted injuries and substance abuse.” (“I’ve been to every state in the union except Alaska.”)
  2. “Our health insurance policy will cover your nose, your ears, your toes, your hands, your right lung, your calf and your knee” (“I’ve been to New York, Connecticut, Nebraska, Washington DC and Vermont”)

Health Plan Exclusions and Limitations This section will tell you what is excluded. Typically elective surgery will not be covered. Also experimental procedures and expenses caused by self-inflicted injuries will not be covered. You should understand each of these exclusions and limitations before you commit to a policy. Most policies will not include maternity insurance, so if you want to get pregnant, make sure that you know how your policy will cover maternity expenses. Unfortunately, maternity insurance is not available in many states except as part of a group insurance plan. To summarize:

* Determine what health insurance plans will cover you in your area

* Determine which health insurance plans offer adequate coverage

*Choose the plans that offers the best value based on price and coverage

The Ins and Outs of Embroidery for Team Sports

July 22nd, 2011

One of the most common applications of embroidery is the customization of sports apparel such as adding logos or names to warm-up uniforms, gym bags, or similar items. When a team customizes their warm-ups or uniforms using embroidery, it creates a sense of unity and gives the team a sharper, more professional look. A significant percentage of customers who shop RobbinsSports.com for sports apparel want to have more than just a blank warm-up jacket or a plain duffle bag. To complete their décor, they know that signing their sportswear with their team’s logo is imperative. However, especially for those who have been given the charge of outfitting the team for the first time, the details of what’s involved in adding embroidery to their order are not clear. Here is some helpful information for understanding the process and the pricing for adding customized embroidery to your next sports apparel purchase.

    Artwork

If you just want to add personalized names to the left chest of a jacket or to the side of a gym bag, you won’t have to worry much about artwork. However, if you need to have a logo (usually these are done as left chest or full back arrangements on jackets or placed on the side or end of a duffel bag) added to your sports apparel, you should come prepared with a digital copy of the logo you want to use. Most embroiderers charge an artwork fee for any significant changes they have to make to your logo to get it ready for digitizing (see below). If you want your embroiderer to start from scratch to create your logo, be prepared to pay about $100.00 or more, depending upon the complexity of the logo you want.

    Digitizing

Digitizing involves transforming a digital image into a file that can be read and interpreted by an embroidery machine. Typical charges for this are about $10 per thousand stitches. So how do you know how many stitches your logo has in it until you get it digitized? Most digitizers can give you a pretty good estimate before they begin digitizing your logo. Getting an estimate on the cost of digitizing your logo will help you keep your expenses within the range you expect when you actually place the order.

After you have had a logo digitized, be sure to keep a copy of it on file for the organization you’re representing. Doing so will enable the team to avoid the digitizing expense when placing future orders. Digitizing can become expensive quickly, especially if you are only placing an order for a small number of uniforms, so it’s obviously best to try to avoid that overhead.

    Pricing

Pricing with embroidery is most often done based upon the stitch count of your logo, which determines the time it takes for any particular embroidery machine to complete the logo. Usually embroiderers give price breaks according to the quantity you are ordering. Of course the pricing varies from one company to another. Here are some benchmarks. If you want to have a left chest logo put onto a typical windbreaker jacket and you are ordering twelve of them, you’ll likely pay about $5.00-$6.00 per embroidered logo for logos that are under 7,000 stitches. If you are ordering less than that quantity, you may find that your embroiderer charges a setup fee as well. Pricing beyond 7,000 stitches usually goes up on a per thousand basis. You can normally expect to pay an additional $0.50-0.60 per thousand stitches beyond 7,000.

For an order of hundreds of jackets compared to just ten or twelve, you should get a price break from your embroiderer. Most companies will go down to a threshold price (say for instance $3.00 per logo for a 7,000 stitch logo) based upon a certain quantity – say 200 articles. Beyond that number of embroidered logos, the pricing will stay the same no matter how many more you have done.

    Lead Times

We find that many of our customers contact us in a rushed hurry, often times asking for miracles. Many times we are able to meet their demands. However, to be a preferred customer, it is best to allow one and a half to two weeks for your order to be embroidered and delivered. Most embroiderers don’t keep an inventory of all the products listed in their catalogs, so you need to plan a few extra days to have those shipped from the manufacturer to your embroiderer. Planning ahead can save you and your embroiderer a lot of headache and stress.

Auto Repair Estimates – Making a Career From Writing Estimates

July 21st, 2011

What is an estimator?
An estimator is a person that writes auto repair estimates on vehicles that have been involved in an accident. The estimator must understand the basic car design and know the nomenclature of a vehicle. The estimator must also have good communication skills as they deal with customers on a daily basis. Not only does the estimator have to communicate with customers, but they will also be the contact person for the insurance companies, shop managers, and the shop foreman or technicians. Therefore, communications is a must for an auto estimator. This career pathway is definitely for a people person. In fact, I would even say that a person that writes auto repair estimates for a auto body repair center needs to be part salesman. It is their job to sell them self, the company, the technicians, and the service that the shop provides. Not all technicians make good estimators, but it is a good idea for the estimator to have experience as a technician. Although, there have been people hired without experience and trained by the shop to write estimates.

Who Hires Estimators?
There are two different industries that hire auto estimators. One is auto body repair shops and the other is insurance companies. This can also split into other categories in each industry. Collision shops can be dealerships, franchise shops, or independent shops. Some insurance companies hire their own auto estimators, while other insurance companies hire independent auto estimators. When you write estimates for the insurance company your title may be an auto appraiser instead of an auto estimator.

What Can An Auto Repair Estimator expect to earn?
This can vary on your experience and if you work for a small body shop or a insurance company. However, according to O*Net the national median for an Auto Damage Appraiser is $53,440 and had a growth rate of 7% to 10% in a ten year period. (2006 – 2016) Some collision repair centers will pay their estimators a salary and a percentage of every job that they sell. Therefore, the more estimate sales that the estimator produce, the more income he or she can earn if on one of these types bonus incentives.

What is the first step to becoming an auto estimator?
The first thing you will need is to learn is the basics. You can do this by enrolling in a collision repair program. Many local community and junior colleges offer these programs. This will allow you to learn the basics about the entire industry. Everything from the body repair, structural or frame repair to painting. Most programs incorporate a basic estimating course within the auto program. This will give you a taste of the industry and determine where you fit in best at. You may decide to become a collision or paint technician instead of a person that writes auto repair estimates. Whatever you decide, this training is the first step to securing a job in the auto collision repair or estimating careers. Some insurance companies require that you have a bachelor degree, but many do not. Experience hold a lot of weight with insurance companies as well. The training is your foundation and how you build the building is up to you. What I mean is, once you have your basics down, you have many opportunities and directions to explore.

Where do I find a facility to gain the training?
The best training for your money is going to be at a junior or community college. Community colleges normally focus on smaller groups, which offers lower student per instructor ratio. This leads to a deeper level of learning. They also receive state and federal funding, which allows them to offer quality programs at a much lower cost to the student. Other training facilities include technical schools and private owned schools. Check with your local community college to see if they offer collision repair. If not, ask them if there is a nearby tech school that does. Chances are that they will know where to point you in the right direction. Once enrolled in a collision repair program, you will be on your way to a career as a person that writes auto repair estimates or many other career pathways that collision repair has to offer.

Top Ten Internet Marketing Mistakes

July 20th, 2011

Every Internet Marketer makes mistakes, and those mistakes usually cost you money! It’s important that we learn from the mistakes that we make so that we do not make them again, and so that we can gain insight into where we went wrong. I have compiled a list of the 10 most common mistakes Internet Marketers make. My goal is to help you steer clear of these mistakes in the hope that I can save you some money, and time!

=>Mistake #1 – Using the Content Network

When you start a Google PPC campaign you should always remember to turn the content network off. The reason for this is because you do not want to receive traffic from pages with Google Adsense on them as these pages are many times plagued with click fraud and non targeted traffic. If you are not an expert, you should not be using the content network. I do not use the content network because it can cost you an arm and a leg and produce absolutely zero positive results.

To turn the content network off, log into your adwords account, click on a campaign, then click the “Edit Campaign Settings” button. On the right of the screen “uncheck” the box that says “Content Network”. You can leave “Google Search” and “Search Network” checked.

=>Mistake #2 – Too Many Keywords per Ad Group

Limit the amount of keywords per Ad Group to less than 25 keyword (75 if using broad, phrase, and exact match types). Having more than 25 keywords can negatively affect your Quality Score as the more keywords you have, the less relevant they are to the ad. DO NOT put more than 25 keywords in an ad group unless all keywords are very highly relevant.

=>Mistake #3 – Keyword Grouping

When you put your keywords into an Ad Group you need to make sure that they are all very similar and have at least one common keyword. You will want to use the keyword(s) within the ad title and description as much as you can. Here is an example:

Ad Group Name: Internet Marketing

Common Keyword: Internet Marketing

Keywords: internet marketing, internet marketing book, internet marketing resource, internet marketing guide, best internet marketing book, internet marketing ebook, internet marketing help.

AD:

Internet Marketing e-Book

Learn How to Make Money Online

Top Internet Marketing eBook Review

YourSiteName.com

You can see that the common word has been use in the adcopy and that all keywords have the common word Internet Marketing. This is how to properly set up an ad Group.

=>Mistake #4 – Using only Broad Match Type

To optimize your keywords for best performance and highest CTR you need to use Broad, Phrase and Exact Match Type Options. A common mistake is to only use the Broad Match Type as many people are not aware of the other match types.

Broad Keyword: Internet Marketing

Phrase Keyword: “Internet Marketing”

Exact Keyword: [Internet Marketing]

Use all three keywords within your Ad Groups.

=>Mistake #5 – Low Daily Budget

If you are wanting to achieve high amounts of traffic you cannot expect to do so with a low daily budget. If your budget is $5 / day and you set your campaign to reflect this budget, chance are that you will not achieve much traffic at all. Google displays your ads based on a number of factors including daily budget. If your budget is set too low your ads will barely be displayed at all. We recommend setting your daily budget slightly higher than you are actually prepared to pay, then monitor your costs. It’s very difficult to get any kind of traffic with a very low daily budget.

=>Mistake #6 – Duplicate URL’s

Google only allows one url to be displayed in their search results per keyword and advertiser. If you are advertising the url: http://www.wealthyaffiliate.com, and another advertiser is advertising the same url, only one ad will be displayed. When coming into a new market there is often another advertiser already advertising the url that you would like to. In this case you need to either raise your CPC in order to outbid the competitor, or, create a landing page. Landing pages always convert into sales better as web surfers like to read reviews, comparisons, and opinions about products prior to making a purchase. If you are not getting impressions for some of your Ad Groups, this could be one of the reasons why.

=>Mistake #7 – Keyword Bid Price too High

When you set your bid prices you need to have a limit, and unless you are an experienced marketer and know that your Ad Group / keyword / ad combinations make you sales you shouldn’t bid too high. I know that you are anxious to get some traffic, but paying $5.00 per click is much too high. On that note, paying $1.00 is many times too high. Try to keep your bid prices as low as possible while achieving the best position you can. Do not try to get traffic by simply out bidding your competitors. The idea is to outsmart competitors using relevent keyword groups and in turn you will pay less and see better results.

=>Mistake #8 – Ad Positions are Too Low

When trying to get traffic to your site you need to use the Google Traffic Estimator to help you determine how much you should bid per keyword. Many times if your CPC (cost per click) is too low, your position will be greater than 10 and you will not be on the first page of search results. For best traffic try to be in position 2-9 (on the first page of search results in Google). With this being said, it is sometimes very expensive to be on the first page and you may be forced to be in page 2. This is ok because as your Quality Score goes up, so will your positioning. Try to get on the first page, but if you cannot because of the bid price being too high, don’t worry, you’ll eventually get there by using our techniques to get a better Quality Score.

=>Mistake #9 – Non-Targeted Keywords

If you are advertising a product like WealthyAffiliate.com or Beating Adwords, you may be inclined to use keywords such as:

Marketing, ebook, Affiliate, Money.

The problem with these keywords is that they receive a lot of traffic, which costs you an arm and a leg, but the traffic does not convert into sales. The reason is because the keywords are not targeted enough. If you are selling Beating Adwords, our new Internet Marketing ebook, using the above keywords, the visitors are not necessarily looking for an IM ebook. If someone types in the keyword “Money” they could be looking for help with Microsoft Money, or Currency Exchange Rates. Same with the keyword “ebook”. Someone could be looking for a golfing ebook, or how to create an ebook.

You need to make sure that your keywords are highly targeted to what you are selling. For example: Internet Marketing ebook, or Make Money Online would be better choices to replace the keywords mentioned above. The more targeted your keywords are to your product, the better conversions you will see.

=>Mistake #10 – Too Many Ads when Split Testing

Split testing allow you to run more than one ad for an ad group to see which adcopy (the text of the ad) creates a higher CTR. In other words, which ad entices searchers to click more frequently. Split testing should only be done using two ads and no more. This way you can determine which ad performs better. You want to treat split testing as a contest, or even a competition. The better performing ad gets to move on to the next round, while the lower gets replaced by a new competitor.

Limit the number of ads you are running per Ad Group to 2 ads when split testing.

On a final note: Expensive mistakes can be made easily in the world of internet marketing and there is risk as we learn and take on competitive markets. Having mentors and a strong network of supportive colleagues is important, if not imperative for success. There are more and more poeple logging on every day, and the market continues to grow. However, unless you approach internet marketing with an understanding of the pitfalls and a plan for success, it will be difficult to foster lasting success. Internet marketing, in all its hype, is only a business (not a get rich quick scheme.) All successful businesses must begin with a plan.

Traditional Kids Summer Camps

July 17th, 2011

It’s that time of year to start planning your child’s adventure to summer camp. You go to websites to obtain summer camp information and your head starts to spin. There are so many choices out there, that you really have to do your homework. You need to ask yourself and your child many questions. What do you like to do? Is there anything of interest that you would like to know more about or learn something new? Do you want to go to a sports camp or an adventure camp? These are just some of the questions you will have to answer.

Some of the types of camps your child might attend are listed below with a brief description to give you some kind of idea what is out there and then giving you and your child some ideas of questions to ask yourself, what does my child want to do and which camp will my child get the most out of.

Sports Camps:

If you child is very athletic, this might be an excellent choice of summer camp. This type of summer camp will focus on sports. There are also summer camps that focus on one particular sport. Most if not all NFL teams have a summer camp. If you son is an avid football player this might be the camp for him. They will also have the opportunity to meet some of the NFL players.

Dog Collars – What You Need To Know

July 12th, 2011

What’s The Best Type Of Dog Collar?

Getting the right dog collar for your dog is one of the most important things you can do for your dog. Your dog will probably spend most of it’s life with it’s collar on, so getting a good comfortable hard wearing dog collar is essential. Luckily for the more style conscious amongst you, modern designer dog collars can be fashionable too! Finding the best type of dog collar for you , will depend on your dog and what the main use for the collar will be.

What is a dog collar for, and is it essential?

The main use for a dog collar is probably the most obvious – controlling your dog. Used in combination with a dog leash, a dog collar can provide you with a certain amount of control to prevent your dog wandering off or straying into road traffic when out walking. There are other uses for a dog collar such as dog or puppy training. Also, you can incorporate your dog’s identity and your contact information within the dogs collar, in the event your dog gets lost.

Choosing the correct size of dog collar is important. Having a collar that is too small can cause your dog harm and at best will leave your dog feeling uncomfortable. Similarly, having a collar that is too big will enable your dog to easily slip out of it. Also, the width and material of the collar neeeds to match the size of your dog or puppy. A heavy duty leather collar will not be much good for a Chihuahua and neither will a lightweight nylon collar be any good on a Rotweiller.

A good rule of thumb, is to make sure that on a large dog, you can slip two fingers between the dogs throat and the collar. Also ensure the collar can rotate easily, but not slip over the dogs ears. On smaller dogs, ensure the collar can rotate easily and does not cause any breathing problems. Make sure it cannot pull over the dogs ears. Remember that in the right situation, many dogs can become little Houdini’s in their own right.

There are many different types of dog collar available. There are sporting collars, designer collars, personalized collars. We will be covering a few main types. These are as follows.

Standard Dog Collar

Dog Training Collars

Electric Dog Collar or Dog Shock Collar

Standard Dog Collar

The standard dog collar is what your dog would wear for everyday use and can come in a variety of materials. Most common these days is the Nylon collar. These come in all sorts of colors and sizes. The main advantage of a nylon collar is it’s price. These collars are very cheap yet provide a superb durability in that they don’t tend to rot and when wet will dry out quickly. Alternative types such as leather collars tend to have a more asthetic natural appeal. A good quality leather collar could easily last the lifetime of your dog. An extension to this are the designer dog collar or fashion collars. These can extend to anything from a simple fashionable pattern or designer name, to a rhinestone dog collar for more special occasions.

The dog collar that you will be using most should be comfortable for your dog and secure, although for lapdogs where the collar can be more of a fashion accessory being comfortable is the priority. For larger dogs, a strong hardwearing collar is a must.

Dog Training Collar

A dog training collar is – as the name suggests – used mainly during training. The type of training will dictate the type of collar.

For obedience training, a choke collar or ‘choke chain’ would be best suited. These collars comprise of a slip loop that tightens around the dogs neck if it pulls on a leash too much. When the dog stops pulling, the chain loosens off. Many people consider the use of a choke collar as unnecessary but used in the right circumstances, this type of collar can be an effective training aid. It is extremely important to only use a choke collar when training and when the dog is supervised. You must NEVER let your dog out alone with a choke collar on. If the dog becomes caught on something they may easily choke themselves.

Electric Dog Collar or Dog Shock Collar

Electric dog collars or as they are sometimes known ‘dog shock collars’ and ‘anti bark collars’ tend to be used to discourage a certain behaviour in a dog. More often than not these are used to control unnecessary barking. These collars consist of a sensor to detect the bark and a pair of electrodes or similar to administer a small harmless shock to the dog. More advanced devices can adjust the level of the shock depending upon how many shocks have been administered before. The main problem with these devices is that the dog is being consistently punished for it’s bad behaviour. This may seem ideal initialy but it is far from this.

Training a dog involves much more than punishing the dog every time it is bad. In fact, using positive reinforcement and praise when the dog stops behaving badly can have a much more positive effect. Getting to the root of the behavioural problem is the best approach. Only then can a preventative training method be implemented. Consider the case of a dog that chews and barks because it misses it’s owner during the day. The barking and chewing is a product of the dog feeling anxious. If the dog recieves an electrical shock every few minutes, that anxious behaviour will be compounded. Read this article for further training information.

For cases where the owner is not present, a far more humane method of discouragement can be implemented. This involves a similar type of collar that detects a bark but the collar releases a natural spray of Citronella that discourages the dogs behaviour. These can be used as a complementary method to other training.

Childcare Transition

July 11th, 2011

Childcare Decisions

Most parents find themselves perplexed and anxious when it comes to making the best choice for the care of their children. Leaving a child in a childcare facility for the first time can be nerve-wrecking experience, both for parents and the child. However, keeping in view the busy lifestyles of most parents, this does seem like the most sensible and inevitable option. Choosing a childcare facility about which the parents feel most confident and can trust with the welfare of their child, along with mentally preparing themselves and the child about the incursion of a childcare facility in their daily lives should be used to decrease the anxiety that props up during this transition phase. Some parents and children have such extreme reactions about a childcare environment that they need counselling from a psychologist!!

Positive Childcare Transition

One of the most-commonly used methods of making the transition easy is by mentally preparing the child. Before the childcare schedule actually begins, the parents have to make the child used to the reality that he/she would be away from the similarity of a home or the presence of parents for some hours, every day. Parents should begin talking to the child about the various kinds of activities that would be a part of childcare schedule. The child should be familiarized with the rules/regulations that are a part of a usual childcare environment. Parents should try and distance themselves for the child a bit – just to an extent that the child becomes familiar with the idea of not being in the company of parents.

Another important aspect of this childcare transition is recognising the child’s special requirements and making sure that these would be satisfied in the childcare/preschool set-up. When it comes to choosing the best-suited childcare center, try out for the best possible and nearest location. This would reduce the scheduling/transport problems that are associated with the childcare format.

Childcare Options:

  • Child care centers are where the child is provided a group setting. He is made to socialize with other children, usually of the same age group, and there is supervision under the presence of numerous qualified or non-qualified childcare providers.
  • Family childcare centers have the provision of the child staying in the carer’s home. The children may or may not be of the same age group but benefit from home-like environment.
  • Some neighborhoods have facilities called In-home child care facilities. Here a childcare provider is provided and he/she visits the parent’s/child’s home to take care of the child.
  • Most popular choice is the nursery schools/pre-schools/playschools. These are professionally-managed childcare centers. Here the child is inducted in a properly-structured, core curriculum that is backed with the presence of qualified preschooling educators.

How Playing Team Sports Can Benefit Your Child

July 4th, 2011

My little nine year old girl started playing soccer last summer. It all started with pure fun, but after playing for a year now, it is evident that team sports really benefit a child’s growth.

When she began playing indoor soccer last summer, her coach complimented her athleticism and suggested that we should allow her to join the league for proper training and coaching in order for a better future. Even though it was quite challenging for her at first, since she hardly knew anyone on the team, her passion motivated her to keep playing. Through the process, she learned to make new friends and accept others. It was an excellent way to develop social skills for the years to come.

Besides learning to mingle, she learned how to listen and obey. Sometimes, I wish I could have the power of the coach to make her listen and follow my instructions without any questioning. One must show your ability and authority in order for the kids to trust in what you said.

What’s more, she learned the golden lesson, “practice makes perfect”. Success does not come in vain. Not only did she have to practice twice a week, but play an actual game as well. Needless to say, the star players on the team were usually the ones who were present at every practice. You may have talent, but practice is what makes full potential of the talent you have. Your harvest depends on how well you’ve farmed.

Of course, she grew physically stronger and more enduring with each game and practice as well. With all the junk food the kids are eating nowadays, exercise is crucial to part of their healthy development.

Last but not least, she learned how to embrace failure and always do her best in each game. While winning is an amazing experience, the game is about how you’ve proved yourself and how well you have done. Winning is just an empty feeling when no hard work was put forth and no team work was shown. Failures are inevitable in life. It is good to learn early how to accept it, learn from it, and move on.

My daughter is now begging to play basketball in the upcoming season just because one of her friends is playing also, but I convinced her otherwise. If she had quit soccer, then what was all the sweat and tears for? She had just begun improving and excelling in soccer that it would be a waste to just quit. Perseverance is another key to success. My little child got ALL that from just playing soccer for one season, what about your kids?

Electronic Cigarette Uses

July 1st, 2011

Smoking is harmful for health. People know this through ‘no smoking’ campaigns but still they smoke. This is not because this is their past time but because this is what happens when one gets addicted to smoking. When one tries to stop smoking then the effects can be seen through one’s health condition like excessive vomiting, high blood pressure, continuously coughing and even sometimes blood pours through mouth.

Some people even get oral cancer and lung cancer due to smoking. Such a pain one has to suffer from so as to be able to get rid of smoking and most of the times people die. After years of research scientists have made what we now call Electronic cigarettes which are a useful alternative to get rid of the habit of cigarette smoking.

The uses of electronic cigarettes are many. Firstly, if you buy electronic cigarette, it has not to be burned like traditional cigarette. Then the entire cigarette burns out fully and leaves no trace at all. One of the most interesting uses of Electronic cigarette is that it does not burn with letting harmful gases out in the air. In traditional cigarettes whenever one would burn the cigarette the nicotine in the tobacco which was inside the cigarette would get burned directly. Thus, due to combustion harmful carcinogens, tar and other dangerous gases would spread in the air. This would cause air pollution and people around the smoke would also get affected. But in Electronic cigarettes there is a vaporizer which makes the liquid in the cartridge of the Electronic cigarette change into the form of vapor and lets out an odorless smoke which is absolutely harmless.

Through the use of Electronic cigarette a large number of people have got a new lease of life and are enjoying a healthy and prosperous living. The new Electronic cigarettes have helped to purify the breathing system of the people. While with traditional smoking people would often complain with breathing problems and chest pain but with Electronic smoking all such problems have got reduced and people have now nothing to worry about.

Electronic cigarettes have so many uses that it can be called as the savior of the masses. With so many smoking addicts out there, one can tell others about Electronic cigarettes so that more and more people use these and get rid of the harmful smoking habit and live a more peaceful life with family and friends.

The History of Memory Foam

July 1st, 2011

Memory foam was first made by NASA for air flight seats. Next the medical sector started using memory foam to ease the pressure off bed sores. The benefits of memory foam were realized more and more as it was seen that it had a special way of responding to temperatures and that it has the ability to divert pressure of a given point. Initially it was called T-Foam by NASA and it was not very durable initially.

Tempur-Pedic realized that memory foam has a great deal of potential. They created their own version of memory foam. They developed it into being durable and practical to use in the medical environment. After a while they realized that luxurious beds could be made out of it. Tempur-Pedic launched very expensive memory foam beds for sale to the public. Other companies have started selling their own versions and as competition increases the prices of these beds will surely become more affordable.
